Starrett 36-24 Lock-Joint Transfer Type Outside Caliper, With Fine Adjustment, 24"/600mm Leg Length Feature

  • Transfer arm for transfer measurements in awkward places where it is necessary to move the legs after they have been set to size
  • Adjusting screw permits fine adjustment for very accurate measurements
  • Knurled adjusting nut allows for final adjustment after the legs have been set to approximate size and the joint has been locked
  • Spring washer under the disc to maintain proper tension of legs when joint is loosened
  • Curved tips to transfer the measurement of the external size of an object

The Starrett 36-24 lock joint transfer-type outside caliper with fine adjustment has a leg length of 24” (600 mm) but opens to approximately one-third larger than the leg length. Inwardly curving leg tips measure the external size of an object. Legs are made from high-grade steel and are ruggedly constructed and well-finished. The locking joint can be quickly and firmly locked by a partial turn of the large knurled disc.

Transfer arm allows the user to transfer measurements from awkward places where it is necessary to move the legs after they have been set to size. The adjusting screw permits fine adjustment for very accurate measurements. Knurled adjusting nut makes the final adjustment after the legs have been set to approximate size and the joint has been locked. The spring washer under the disc maintains proper leg tension when the joint is loosened. Curved tips transfer the measurement of the external size of an object.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used also for measuring size differential between two objects. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.

They acquired other companies throughout the years, expanding their services into making precision measurement instruments and tools, such as calipers, micrometers, saw blades, and gauges. Brown & Sharpe 599-579-4 DIAL-CAL Dial Caliper, White Face, 0-6" Range, +/-0.001" Accuracy, 0.001" Graduation, Without Thumbwheel Feature

  • Precise dial graduations of 0.001", with one revolution equivalent to 0.100"
  • Hardened stainless steel for long life
  • The 1.25" diameter rotating dial has a lock screw to hold the sliding jaw in position, to help ensure consistent measuring
  • Covered rack to keep foreign matter from clogging the gear, to help prevent measurement error
  • Linear accuracy meets international DIN 862 standards

The Swiss-made Brown & Sharpe 599-579-4 dial caliper measures 0 to 6 inches with 0.001” accuracy. Linear accuracy meets the internationally used Deutsches Institut fuer Normung (DIN) 862: Vernier Calipers Requirements and Testing standards. This handy measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate readings with the sharp, black graduations on the no-glare, satin-finished bar, crisp lines on the white dial face, and knife edge contacts for inside and outside measurements. Makes inside, outside, depth, and step measurements.

One full revolution of the dial is equivalent to 0.100”. The jaw depths on this caliper are 1.5” for the outside measuring jaws and 0.512" on the inside measuring jaws. The knife-edge contacts can be used to scribe parallel lines on the workpiece. This caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. The lock screw locks the dial and holds the sliding jaw in position. Adjustable zero set allows the user to set zero at a convenient distance. The depth rod is integrated into the rack of the caliper, unlike many calipers which offer a detachable depth rod, or none at all. The hardened stainless steel components, including the bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Spring anti-backlash control offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls, which prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; spring anti-backlash systems use a spring to add a compressive force, thereby minimizing backlash.

Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. Starrett 1202-4 Dial Caliper, White Face, 0-4" Range, +/-0.001" Accuracy, 0.001" Graduation, In Fitted Case Feature

  • Precise dial graduations of 0.001", with one revolution equivalent to 0.100"
  • Thumb-operated fine adjustment roll allows for one-hand use
  • Lock screw holds the sliding jaw in position, to ensure a consistent measurement
  • Rack teeth point down to keep foreign matter from clogging the gear, to help prevent measurement error
  • Hardened stainless steel bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod for accuracy and long life

The Starrett 1202-4 dial caliper measures 0 to 4 inches with 0.001” accuracy. This handy measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate depth, inside, and outside readings with the sharp, black graduations every 0.100” on the no-glare, satin-finished bar, crisp lines on the white dial face, and knife edge contacts on the jaws.

One full revolution of the dial is equivalent to 0.100”. The knife-edge contacts can be used to scribe parallel lines on the workpiece. This caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. The lock screw locks the dial bezel and holds the sliding jaw in position. Positive double pinion anti-backlash control offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls – which prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash. Double pinion anti-backlash systems have two round gears (also called pinions) in contact with the rack gear that extends down the length of the caliper itself. The two pinions have a lower chance of disengaging with the rack gear than a single gear, thereby keeping the caliper more accurate than a single gear anti-backlash system. The rack teeth point down to keep foreign matter from clogging the gear operations. This prevents measurement errors where metal chips could interfere with proper caliper operation.

Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. Starrett B120A-6 Dial Caliper, American Made, Black Face, 0-6" Range, +/-0.001" Accuracy, 0.001" Graduation, In Fitted Plastic Case Feature

  • Black Dial
  • Sharp, clear dial graduations
  • Knife-edge contacts for both inside and outside measurements
  • One hand use with the thumb-operated, fine adjustment roll
  • Hardened stainless steel bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod
  • Precise dial graduations of 0.001", with one revolution equivalent to 0.100"
  • Thumb-operated fine adjustment roll allows for one-hand use
  • Lock screw holds the sliding jaw in position, ensuring a consistent measurement
  • Rack teeth point down to keep foreign matter from clogging the gear, which helps prevent measurement error
  • Hardened stainless steel bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod for accuracy and long life

The Starrett 120A-6 dial caliper measures 0 to 6 inches with 0.001” accuracy. This handy measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate readings with the sharp, black graduations on the no-glare, satin-finished bar, crisp lines on the black dial face, and knife edge contacts for inside and outside measurements.

One full revolution of the dial is equivalent to 0.100”. The jaw depths on this caliper are approximately 1-1/2” for the outside measuring jaws and 5/8" on the inside measuring jaws. The knife-edge contacts can be used to scribe parallel lines on the workpiece. This caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. The lock screw locks the dial bezel and holds the sliding jaw in position. Positive split gear anti-backlash control offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls, which prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; split gear systems actually split the gear into two gears, each half as thick as the original gear. One of these gears is then fixed to the shaft while the other gear is allowed to turn. The free-turning gear is connected to coil springs that rotate it until all the backlash in the control system has been eliminated. The rack teeth point down to keep foreign matter from clogging the gear operations. This prevents measurement errors where metal chips could interfere with proper caliper operation.

  • Hardened stainless steel bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod for accuracy and long life

The Starrett 1202F-6 dial caliper measures 0 to 6 inches with 0.01” and 1/64” accuracy. This handy measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate depth, inside, and outside readings with the sharp, black graduations on the no-glare, satin-finished bar, crisp lines on the dial face, and knife edge contacts on the jaws. The dial’s inner, decimal scale is white, while the outer, fractional scale is yellow.

The hardened stainless steel components, including the bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life.

Mitutoyo 505-677 Dial Caliper, 0.1" Per Rev., Inch, White Face, 0-12" Range, +/-0.002" Accuracy, 0.001" Graduation Feature

  • Measures 0 to 12" with +/-0.002" accuracy
  • Hardened stainless steel construction, for protection of caliper components
  • Four-way measurement capability, for outside (OD), inside (ID), depth, and step measurements
  • Titanium nitride (TiN) coating on beam surfaces, for wear-resistance
  • Inch system of measurement, for measuring speed in specific applications

The Mitutoyo 505-677 dial caliper measures 0 to 12” with +/-0.002” accuracy necessary for applications requiring high levels of accuracy, such as in scientific research and in industries where parts must fit exactly. The Dial caliper is a refinement of the vernier caliper. Like the vernier scale, the dial’s measurement gives the final fraction of the total measurement to obtain a highly accurate result. Instead of using a vernier scale, this caliper uses a dial mechanism to read this final fraction. This dial caliper takes inside, outside, depth, and centering readings.

The dial caliper has a fixed (main) scale and a movable dial, unlike the vernier caliper which has a second, movable vernier scale. The dial is circular and has a pointer; it is mounted on a toothed gear track which drives the pointer. As the dial moves over the main scale rule, the pointer typically rotates once every inch or tenth of an inch (the least count division) to give the additional fractional reading. The second measurement is added to the main scale reading to obtain an accurate result. The minimum measurement (least count division) of the dial creates the accuracy of that result. The main scale may be marked in inches, millimeters, or both. The dial is marked in inches or millimeters. The dial can be rotated beneath the pointer to measure size differential between two objects. A thumbwheel permits fast measuring and a rotating screw controls the caliper’s movement. The dial caliper is easier to read than the vernier caliper, thus safeguarding against user reading errors. Its standard of precise measurement complements the use of the vernier caliper; the dial provides an ease in reading and interpolating measurements which most vernier calipers, due to their need for direct observation of both scales, may not provide.

The 505-677 has a dial with a white face; the dial measures in inches. Its most precise measurement possible, or Least Count, is 0.002". One revolution of the dial indicator needle equals one-tenth inch on the main scale. The dial uses a rack-and-pinion mechanism and is mounted on a gear track where each tooth equals 0.025" or one quarter of the dial resolution, and four teeth equal 0.100". The smooth-moving dial is graduated in 0.001" and has gear train shock protection. A thumbwheel permits fast and easy measuring. A clamping screw controls scale movement and a dial calibration lock holds the sliding jaw’s position. The caliper is made of hardened stainless steel construction with titanium nitride (TiN) coating on the beam wear surface to help extend caliper life. With its fixed and movable jaws, it has four-way measurement capability: outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), depth, and step, where the butt end of the fixed jaw measures one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer "steps" are measured. It has a Main Slide Length of 15.9", a Dial Length of 2.7", a Dial Height of 1.7", an Upper Jaw Length of 2.52", a Lower Jaw Length of 2.52", a Jaw Thickness of 0.15", and a Depth Measuring Blade Length of 0.79". Jaws are lapped to increase accuracy. Range is 0 to 12", Range per Revolution is 0.10", Resolution (Length) is 0.001000", and Accuracy is rated at + or - 0.002", which meets Federal Accuracy Specifications GGG-C-111B.

Vernier, dial, and digital calipers all give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The dial caliper is used for measuring size differential between two objects, as well. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.
